Ivan Fandino tripped on his cloak during a bullfight before an enraged animal plunged its horn into his lungs before he could get to his feet.
Fandino’s feet got entangled in his cape, causing him to trip, when the injured bull jumped at him.
Butting him in the back, before forcing him to the ground, the bull used its huge horns to attack.
Fandino got to his feet but was battered by the bull a second time before being trampled over as his colleagues rushed in to take the animal’s attention.
Fandino, according to reports, urged his rescuers to help move him with his final worlds believed to have been: “Hurry up, I’m dying.”
The horrendous incident took place in the town of Mont-de-Marsan, near the Spanish border.
Horror video footage emerged after the father and husband was killed.
The bullfighter can be seen being tossed into the air by the bull during the so-called sporting event.
Shocked spectators were subjected to the awful scenes as the bull plunged its horn into his Fandino’s chest.
The matador, from Spain’s Basque region, had fought hundreds of bulls in his career.
Fandino was rushed to an ambulance where it is said his heart stopped.
A shocked colleague said: “It’s a tragedy.
“We just do not know how it could have happened.”
Spanish-style bullfights have legal protections in parts of southern France where it is practised.
Victor Barrio, was the last Spanish bullfighter killed after being savaged in the bullring in Teruel on July 9, 2016, at the age of 29.
Humane Society International said in a statement: “The matador’s death is a tragedy but for the 1,000 bulls brutally killed in French bullfights every year, every single fight is a tragedy in which they have no chance of escaping a protracted and painful death.
“Bloodsports like this should be consigned to the history books, no-one should lose their life for entertainment, human or animal.”
